Maintaining psychological well-being in covid-19 crisis

In the midst of managing a situation like the COVID-19 outbreak, it is normal to feel overwhelmed, worried and anxious. With increasing number of cases in our Country, we might get distressed. Staying in isolation might make us feel frustrated, bored, angry, irritated and depressed. We may feel uncertainty about the future or worry about isolation amidst rapidly changing schedules and social plans.
Experiencing these feelings is perfectly normal and acceptable. However, here are some ways which might help you increase the resilience during the pandemic :

1. MINIMISE YOUR EXPOSURE TO LISTENING/WATCHING NEWS
While staying aware about the current situation of the crisis is important, if you repeatedly watch news and use social media to know more about what is going on, it will just make you more anxious. Limit the exposure and watch when it is essential.

2. TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY
While we know we do not have to show up anywhere everyday, we tend to be lethargic and experience fatigue. We avoid taking care of our bodies. If we look after our bodies, we will feel much better than before. How can we do that?

a) Meditate : Relaxing your mind makes everything better eventually. Give 5 to 10 minutes to your mind for meditating everyday.

b) Take long showers : Taking long showers makes one feel relaxed, fresh and better. There are many health benefits of long showers :
i) they help soothe your aching muscles
ii) makes it easier to fall asleep
iii) makes you feel better if you're feeling sick
iv) can help ease stress

c) Get ready
: Because why not? Put that face mask, shave those legs, try those home made hair masks and put on that dress that you havent worn since 17th century.

3. KNOW THE FACTS TO HELP REDUCE THE STRESS
As we all know there are many rumours spreading on WhatsApp University that many people believe and get anxious unnecessarily. We should be aware of all the FACTS and get rid of RUMORS. We should educate others about the fake rumors too.

4. STICK TO ROUTINES
It is not as easy as it seems. But try sticking to your regular routine. Even if your schools or colleges are closed, take some time out for learning a new skill , doing some fun activities and studying!

5. SHOW YOUR CREATIVITY
Believe it or not, there has always been one thing that you wanted to do but you never had enough time to do it. Well, now all you have is time. So buckle up, and get that shit done! It will make you feel better about yourself and give you sense of achievement.

6. CHECK IN WITH YOUR LOVED ONES
Virtual communication can help you and your loved ones feel less lonely and isolated. Call your relatives and friends. Make sure they're okay and well. Check up on those friends you have not talked since you passed out. Be more creative, video call your friends and do fun activities together.

7. STUCK AT TOXIC HOUSEHOLD
I am sorry if you're someone who has stuck at home with toxic family member/s.
Here are few ways which can help you cope:
i) Find a safe space at your home where you feel safe and peaceful.
ii) Keep yourself busy so that you dont have to deal with anyone who is toxic to you.
iii) Learn to 'agree to disagree'
iv) Maintain a journal to pour all your negative feelings in it.
v) Talk to someone you trust.
vi) Consider taking online therapy if things are very distressing.

8. STUDENTS STUCK IN HOSTEL/PG

Feeling lonely and frustrated is normal in this situation. Just know that this phase will pass soon. Stay connected to your family members and friends. Keep yourself busy with the work you enjoy the most.

9. IF YOU FEEL FRUSTRATED...READ THIS
One woman from Italy posted on her twitter account "My 8 year old son is isolated in hospital and he is crying because he can not have his favourite teddy bear and his mother with him and you are worried because you can't go to the beach?"
This shook me. We are lucky to stay at home and be safe. We should cherish this.

10. PEOPLE WITH PRE EXISTING MENTAL HEALTH CONDITIONS
People who already have any mental health issue should continue with their medication and therapy. Be aware of new or worsening symptoms. Seek help immediately if things go out of control. Stay connected with people around you and your friends over phone. Share everything you feel with any one trusted person.
